Region 5 Teacher of the Year Announced:

The Virginia Department of Education has named Mrs. Janice Suddith as Region 5 Teacher of the Year. Mrs. Suddith is the Lynchburg City Schools 2006-07 Teacher of the Year.

Mrs. Suddith, a social studies teacher, has spent the past twenty-two years teaching students at Paul Laurence Dunbar Middle School for Innovation. Mrs. Suddith was surprised with the news today, Tuesday, September 12 at 10:00 a.m. at Dunbar Middle School for Innovation. A representative from the Department of Education was present along with Lynchburg City Schools administration.

Being named Region 5 Teacher of the Year places Mrs. Suddith in the running with seven other teachers throughout the state to be named Virginia’s Teacher of the Year. Mrs. Suddith was presented with flowers and balloons by Superintendent Dr. Paul McKendrick. Kelvin Moore, VA Dept. of Education School Board Member and Lynchburg native presented Mrs. Suddith with a framed certificate from the Department of Education and he also read a letter sent to Mrs. Suddith by Governor Timothy M. Kaine. Mrs. Suddiith is a graduate of both Mary Washington University and the University of Virginia. She will be recognized with other Regional Teacher of the Year winners at a dinner in Richmond, VA on October 20th. On that evening the Virginia Teacher of the Year will be announced. Mrs. Suddith will also celebrate her birthday on October 20th. Mrs. Suddith was presented with a new Toyota automobile from Lynchburg Nissan, a LCS Education Foundation partner in June 2006.
