The Writing on the Sidewalk

What does world peace look like to you? Is it a heart, a globe, two people holding hands? At Dunbar Middle School images of peace were everywhere in late September. Over the course of three days every student at the school drew their vision in front of the school. Hundreds of pictures lined the walkway, greeting visitors as they entered the school.

The students were drawing these images thanks to an international program called “Chalk For Peace”. Students across the globe were using sidewalk chalk to make a statement. For students at Dunbar, it was part of social studies class but it enabled them to advocate for peace with other children from around the world in a unified voice and vision for peace in our world. Locally, this event was sponsored through Art Zone, a grant from The Academy of Fine Arts.
