According to research done by Money Magazine and Salary.com, the marketing industry is one of the top 20 most satisfying and lucrative industries in the U.S.. Our Career Technical Education teachers and curriculum are giving students the skills they need not only to be competitive in that industry but to be standouts as well. The proof came the weekend of March 13th, 2009 in Norfolk when three Heritage High School students earned top honors in the state competition.

Each event at the state marketing/ DECA competition had 65 to 70 competitors from across the state. Each student took a 100 question marketing and industry specific exam and then developed “on the spot” marketing campaigns and presentations for a panel of judges. Bobby Jones won first place in Sports and Entertainment Marketing, and Keina Schweikart and Jessica Murphy earned first place honors in the Buying and Merchandising Management Event.

All three students will now head to Los Angeles to represent Virginia’s best high school marketing students. During the L.A. competition they will not only face students from other states but other countries as well.
