Peace, Love, and Chalk: T.C. Miller draws with thousands
September 25, 2009 was not pretty for Lynchburg. Rain and dark clouds created a dreary day for most. However, within the confines of T.C. Miller Elementary School bright color and chipper moods prevailed thanks to a monumental amount of sidewalk chalk, and a group of enthusiastic teachers and students ready to draw. The sidewalk chalk was provided by ArtZone, Inc. a local arts non-profit whose main focus is to bring art to children. The wonderful attitudes can be attributed to the task at hand – drawing peace.
Typically Chalk4Peace, a nationally celebrated event, is held outside of schools across the country. Two-hundred thousand students were expected to take part this year. They are charged with the duty of drawing their visions of peace on the sidewalk surrounding the school. On September 25th students intended on following that national trend. Mother Nature had different plans. The constant rain caused T.C. Miller’s event to be moved into the auditorium and giant pieces of paper were spread across the floor. Class by class, each student had the opportunity to draw peace. Even though plans changed for everyone that day, no one seemed to mind.
