The Greenest in the State
Lynchburg City Schools took the Virginia School Board Association’s Green School Challenge and won! The VSBA is honoring our division for its excellence in energy savings over the past year. It has won first place for its size. Administrators and School Board members were honored in Williamsburg during the VSBA’s annual conference the week of November 18, 2009.
Before the start of the 2008-2009 school year staff and students committed to conserving as much energy as possible. During the year they flipped switches, recycled, and even let teachers go home early (but after school, of course) if they were “caught” saving electricity. As a result the division, as a whole, saved 1.8 million kilowatt hours as compared to the school year before. Those savings resulted in the equivalent of $144,000 in electricity savings, $17,000 in natural gas savings, and $8,000 in water savings.
The VSBA’s Green Schools Challenge is designed to motivate school divisions to decrease their carbon footprint and the carbon footprint of those around them.
