Three elementary schools are celebrating the Safe Routes to School grants with another “Walk to School Day” on Tuesday, April 24th.

Earlier this year, the City of Lynchburg was awarded a total of $376,796 in construction grants from the Virginia Department of Transportation. The grant money will be used to increase pedestrian safety around Perrymont, Dearington, and, T. C. Miller, Elementary School for Innovation by installing sidewalks, crosswalks, and signaled pedestrian crossings.

The Safe Routes to School project began at the end of 2010 as a partnership with Lynchburg City Schools, the City of Lynchburg, and Region 2000. The first “Walk to School Day” was held in October 2011 to help promote health and wellness associated with walking.

Here is how the grant money will be used at each school:

Perrymont:  $134,982
Project will install approximately 3,154 feet of new sidewalk, new marked crosswalks, installation of handicap accessible curbs at intersections, and upgraded school zone pavement markings.

Dearington:  $115,920
Project will install approximately 2,930 feet of new sidewalk, new marked crosswalks around the school and neighborhood, handicap accessible curbs, and new school zone pavement markings.

T. C. Miller  $125,944
Project will install approximately 1,745 feet of new sidewalk, new marked crosswalks, and 8 timed pedestrian signals.
