Andrew PattersonAndrew Patterson, a seventh-grader at Paul Laurence Dunbar Middle School for Innovation, has shattered the school’s record for Accelerated Reader points by earning more than 1,700 points in the program this year.

The previous record was 1,400, and last year’s top scorer earned 916 points.

This is a very rare feat according to Carrie Dodge, the school’s librarian, who admits that on a few occasions, the young bookworm has been caught reading during class.

Andrew, a straight-A student, read 111 books this year, including the unabridged version of Les Miserables, which earned him 100 points, and Don Quixote, which earned him 71.

“He’s a sponge,” said Dodge.
