Lynchburg City Schools, Region 2000 and the City of Lynchburg tied the knot on their tennis shoes once again as they partnered up for another successful International Walk to School Day.

This year’s walk took place on October 3rd at Perrymont, T. C. Miller, Dearington, Linkhorne, R. S. Payne and William Marvin Bass elementary schools. Paul Munro will participate in Walk to School Day on Oct. 24th.

The Walk to School Day is part of the Safe Routes to School Program that is geared at making walking and biking to school a safer and more appealing option.

On the morning of October 3rd students, including bus and car riders, walked along with parents, teachers, and community volunteers from a central location located close to each school.

Similar events were hosted across the country to build safer routes for children to walk and bike to local schools, to remind motorist to be alert and drive accordingly around school facilities, and to emphasize the importance of physical activity in the health and well-being of our children.

Over the course of the year these schools will be utilizing awarded program funds for other activities to foster walking and healthy lifestyle awareness with their students and lay foundation for the goal to encourage families to walk with their students to school or other community resources in Lynchburg.
