As part of a national pilot project, Lynchburg City Schools plans to offer more than 50 opportunities for area families to work with experts so that they can maximize their financial aid for college and technical certification programs.

LCS is partnering with the Beacon of Hope and local colleges to bring the “Got FAFSA?” initiative to Heritage and E. C. Glass high schools. “Got FAFSA?” kicks off this Wednesday, November 14th at 7:00 p.m. at Heritage High School. It will also be offered at E. C. Glass High School on Tuesday, December 4th at 7:00 p.m., and throughout the coming months.

LCS was one of 87 school districts across the country chosen to participate in this FAFSA Completion Pilot Project. It will enable LCS to track student completion of the form and target efforts to ensure that many more students take that step.

This initiative, sponsored by the Lumina Foundation, Kresge Foundation, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in partnership with the U.S. Department of Education, is helping school districts share creative approaches to enable 100 percent of students to complete the FAFSA, which stands for Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Research shows that 90 percent of students who complete the FAFSA will enroll in postsecondary education within 12 months of high school graduation, according to Secretary of Education Arne Duncan.
