Rachel JohnsonRachel Johnson, a sixth grader at Paul Laurence Dunbar Middle School for Innovation, was the district winner of the Barnes and Noble "My Favorite Teacher Contest." Her story about her kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Kate Wall, will proceed to the regional competition.

A Loving Teacher

One of my heroes is my Kindergarten teacher who works at Paul Munro Elementary School. Her name is Kate Wall. She is an awesome kindergarten teacher because she is really fun and she is really good with kids. Her classroom has a basketball hoop on the door, a season wall, and a word wall. Mrs. Wall does a lot of fun things for each season and/or holiday.

During the fall season, Mrs. Wall puts a scarecrow in her room. Her students give him/her a name and he/she becomes a student in the class. When her class is studying bats, she puts bats up around the room and each day, the number of bats in the classroom changes. When she does that it freaks the kids out. Mrs. Wall also makes them bats to take home and keep. When they are studying the letter K, she gives all her students a key to her heart. She puts it on a strong so they won’t lose it. I still have mine even though I’m in sixth grade. On the 100th day of school, they have a big celebration. She has a chart that marks off the days until the 100th day.

For Valentine’s Day, she decorates a table with hears and some of the presents students give her. Her class goes around the school (with her supervision) whishing everyone love. She gives them a crown with a little wand. They walk up to someone and tap them with their wand and say, "I wish you love." On Presidents’ Day she has a president and the president gets to choose who the vice president is. They even have a mini Whitehouse for the president and vice president.

In February, every year, she has a wedding of Mr. Q and Ms. U. They even have chairs set up on the sides, just like a real wedding and they have an aisle. This is because q can’t be in a word without u. She also has all of the vowels as females and the consonants are males. There is always a best man and a flower girl for the wedding. She always picks a boy to be Mr. Q and a girl to b Ms. U. After the wedding is a reception and they dance like at a real reception.

Having a teacher like Mrs. Wall has helped me appreciate a lot of things, also, to try to have fun in everything. She helps every child feel good about him or herself and feel like they can do anything if they set their mind to it. That is why Mrs. Kate Wall is my favorite teacher.
