Students from E .C. Glass and Heritage high schools had a chance to show off their skills at a variety of state competitions in April. Many students came home with state titles and scholarships.

STATE FCCLA COMPETITION

Culinary Arts

Culinary Arts students from E.C. Glass and Heritage High Schools attended the FCCLA (Family, Career, & Community Leaders of America) State Leadership and Recognition Conference in Virginia Beach.  Students competed in STAR events showcasing their culinary skills against other students across the state.  These LCS students brought home the following awards:

Lakita Spinner – 1st place, Gold, $3,000 scholarship to Culinary Institute of Virginia

Cierra Russell – 4th place, Silver

Career Portfolio and Exhibit Event-Patisserie
Trisha Guthman – 2nd place, Silver, $2,000 scholarship to Culinary Institute of Virginia

Career Portfolio and Exhibit Event-Decorated Cakes
Caroline May – 3rd place, Silver, $1,500 scholarship to Culinary Institute of Virginia

Career Portfolio and Exhibit Event-Breads
Nora Strickland – 5th place, Silver

Creative Centerpieces
Lachina Carter – 2nd place, Bronze

Knife Skills/Chicken Fabrication
Patrick Amerell--Silver

Live Culinary Team Event
Blair Rucker, Angelique Fulton, Khiande Richards (Culinary II Team) – 4th place, Silver

Rhevin Spinner, Hermione’ Calloway (Culinary I Team) – Bronze

 

Early Childhood Education

Three students from E.C. Glass and Heritage high schools competed in STAR events showcasing their Early Childhood skills against other students across the state. These students brought home the following awards:

Occupational Job Interviews
Cassidy Bowyer – 1st place. She applied to become a Day Care Assistant and earned a $1,000 scholarship to Johnson and Wales.

Occupational Teach and Train
Philem Andress – 1st place. She created her own day care and ran it at the American Legion for an evening.  She then built a schoolhouse to showcase her efforts.

Occupational Illustrated Talk
Keyarria Lewis  – 3rd place. She created a power point lesson on anti-bullying, along with activities, hands-on crafts and prizes for all students. She taught her lesson at three LCS elementary schools:  Linkhorne, Sandusky, and Sheffield 5th grades. She had to create posters to showcase all of her efforts and accomplishments.

All 3 students had to put together a full portfolio to take and use during their competition times.

 

STATE SKILLS USA

E. C. Glass student Samuel Hudnall placed second in Technical Drafting.
