American Education WeekFor the fourth straight year, Lynchburg City Schools is celebrating American Education Week with daily activities that honor our educators as well as invite parents and community members to be a part of the educational process.

On November 18-22, each elementary, middle and high school will follow special themes in observance of this national celebration.

The week is highlighted by our "Get to Know Your Schools" school tours on Tuesday, November 19th from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. This event is open to all prospective parents interested in learning more about the public education opportunities available with LCS. The tours will include question and answer sessions and classroom observations, and guests will have a chance to meet current LCS parents and school administrators.

Also, on Thursday, November 21st, teachers around the school division will be hosting an Educator for a Day. More than 20 guest educators will include engineers, physicians, HR representatives, local politicians and more. They will share their expertise as part of the lesson plan for that day. This opportunity is a win-win for all involved, as it gives the community greater knowledge of the dedication and service that teachers give every day, while also giving students a chance to see how their curriculum pertains to the real-world workforce.

COLLEGE APPLICATION WEEK

Hundreds of students are expected to apply to Virginia Colleges this week at E. C. Glass and Heritage high schools.

Both LCS high schools are central Virginia’s centerpieces for College Application Week in Virginia during the week of November 18-22. During this week, students may apply to any of Virginia’s 24 two-year colleges, 33 independent colleges and 15 public universities in which they are interested. Guidance and Future Center staff at Glass and Heritage will be onsite working with students to complete applications, forward transcripts and even begin the financial aid process.

On November 19-21, admissions representatives from from the University of Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth University, James Madison University, Lynchburg College, Randolph College, CVCC, Liberty University, Sweet Briar College, Emory and Henry College, University of Richmond, Eastern Mennonite University, Hampden-Sydney College, Centra College of Nursing, Hollins University, Roanoke College, Jefferson College of Arts and Sciences,  Virginia State University, Ferrum College, Longwood University, Averett University, and other local colleges, will be on site at both schools, waiving application fees, providing admissions tips and helping each senior to complete at least one college application, and in some cases offering on-site direct admissions for students.

Parents are also welcomed and encouraged to stop by to glean more information about the college admissions process and about the specific Virginia colleges in which their seniors are interested.

HOMELESS AND HUNGER AWARENESS WEEK

Lynchburg City Schools serves more than 100 students who are considered homeless.

That’s why, during American Education Week, LCS is also recognizing another important week of awareness: National Homeless and Hunger Awareness Week.

Among the community guests who are invited into our schools, volunteers and public safety officials will be coming to all third grade classrooms throughout the week to read a book about homelessness to the students.

The book that will be read to students is called "Where Can I Build My Volcano." It is a book about a young lady who goes through a homeless situation and has nowhere to build her science fair project. She lives with her mother in a car and various shelters, afraid to talk about her situation with friends.
