Math

The elementary math curriculum for the Lynchburg City Schools is based on the Virginia Standards of Learning. The curriculum at each grade level focuses on six strands of mathematical knowledge: number and number sense, computation and estimation, measurement, geometry, probability and statistics, and patterns, functions and algebra. Two levels of math instruction are available for grades 2 through 5: on grade level instruction, and accelerated instruction on the next grade level SOL. Textbooks and manipulative kits by Harcourt Math (Virginia Edition) are provided as a resource for every elementary student. An Instructional Specialist for Math is also provided by the division to serve as a resource for all elementary schools. More specific information about the math content that is taught can be found in the Math Curriculum Timelines. Questions about the elementary math curriculum may be addressed to April Bruce, Supervisor for Math and Science (bruceam@lcsedu.net or 522-3700, ext. 136), or Patty West, Instructional Specialist for Math (westpl@lcsedu.net or 522-3715).
