Social Studies
Lynchburg City Schools provides social studies classes for Kindergarten through 5th grade students based on the Virginia Standards of Learning. Curriculum at each grade level focuses on four key areas: history, geography, civics, and economics. In Kindergarten and 1st grade, students learn about American leaders, citizenship, basic economic concepts, and fundamental map and geography skills. In 2nd and 3rd grades, students branch out into the world, learning about American Indians and the contributions to the world of the ancient civilizations of China, Egypt, Greece, Rome, and Mali. In 4th and 5th grades, students study their home state of Virginia its geography, economy, and history. Library Media Program
Libraries in each elementary school, staffed by library media specialists, provide opportunities for students to read and borrow a variety of books and other materials and to become effective users of ideas and information. Students visit the library media center independently and with their class to checkout books and participate in lessons taught by the school library media specialist on a wide variety of topics related to literature, reference materials, research, and content-related Standards of Learning. Guidance and Counseling Program
Guidance counselors in each elementary school provide academic guidance, career guidance, and person/social counseling. No student is required to participate in any counseling program to which the student’s parents object.
