Parent Center

The Parent Resource Center was established in 1982 to provide parents of students in Lynchburg City Schools with information and materials to use at home to help their children become better readers. In recent years, materials on parenting and topics of interest to parents of children with disabilities and the gifted program have been added to the collection for checkout. Parents are encouraged to visit the Parent Resource Center located in the Tarkington Building, Suite 107, 2600 Memorial Avenue.

Monday - Friday (when school is in session)
9:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

Materials and Resources

  may be checked out for 1-week (limit 2)
• Materials
  available for 2-week check-out (limit 5 items per visit)

  • Children’s books
  • Book/cassette sets
  • Activity card sets
  • Parenting books
• Worksheets
  A variety of reading and math skills are also available to help parents reinforce skills being taught at school and to work with preschool children on readiness skills.

How to Motivate Children to Read

• Help children find time to read.
• Surround children with reading material.
• Become aware of children’s interest.
• Nurture children’s interest and seek out books to support them.
• Encourage children to make their own reading selections, and respect them.
• Share children’s reading experiences.
• Value children’s opinions and concerns.

Encouraging Good Homework Habits

• Set aside a specific time each day for homework.
• Ask and answer questions about the material being studied.
• Encourage your child to bring home class notes.
• Expect homework of some kind every night.
• Promote critical thinking.
