Volunteers

Linkhorne has an active group of volunteers. During this past school year, our volunteers have logged more than 2000 hours of volunteer time. We could not do many of the projects we offer for the children without the help of our wonderful volunteers. Our volunteers help on a daily basis with tutoring students, reading to the classes, with clerical tasks, baking needs, school plays, PTO fundraisers, fieldtrips and much, much more. It is these special programs and experiences which make the children’s experiences at Linkhorne unique and memorable. We appreciate all the help our volunteers give and certainly have an open door for anyone wishing to get involved. We truly appreciate the contributions the LES PTO has made to Linkhorne Elementary School.

Staffing

The staff at Linkhorne consists of 27 classroom teachers from grades Pre-K through 5 which creates a class size of approximately 20 students each. Along with the students’ classroom experiences, students receive 30 minutes of instruction in music, and movement education on a weekly basis and 40 minutes of art instruction on a bi-weekly basis. For students with special needs, our school offers resource assistance in the areas of reading, mathematics, speech, and special education. For all curriculum areas, our librarian provides instruction in whole group settings. In addition to lesson time, students are given checkout time to pick out books on a weekly basis.

School History

Linkhorne Elementary School opened in 1966 as a single, octagonal building housing six classrooms for fifth and sixth grade students. These students came from two older, overcrowded elementary schools in the area whose eventual closing formed the student body for the new Linkhorne Elementary School. Modifications were made to the original building plans in 1970, and new educational specifications were made based on the recommendation that Linkhorne be constructed to support an innovative, open-space learning environment. The new building opened in 1971 with 26 classrooms serving approximately 580 students in kindergarten through fifth grades.

In January 1988, a fire of unknown origin caused major damage to Linkhorne, destroying the north pod with six classrooms and heavily damaging four adjoining classrooms. During the rebuilding initiative, parents, community members, administrators, and staff considered educational and population trends and decided to build six additional classrooms and resource areas, replacing the ten classrooms with sixteen. The open-plan structure became a more traditional structure with contained classrooms.

Over the years, Linkhorne Elementary School has contributed to the Lynchburg City Schools’ Tradition of Excellence. In May 1989, the community came together to build an extensive playground facility called PAL (Play at Linkhorne). In 1993, Linkhorne Elementary School was identified by the United States Department of Education as one of 274 schools nationally to be recognized as a Blue Ribbon School.
