Principal's Message

Welcome to Linkhorne Elementary School for the 2017-18  school year! We look forward to working with you to make this an exciting and successful year of learning and growth for your child. The staff of Linkhorne Elementary School understands that all students come to school with diverse skills and talents, and we strive to meet the unique learning needs of every child. Your child will experience small group guided instruction in reading and math, hands-on learning experiences, and the use of technology to support and enhance instruction and learning. Additionally, we offer before and after school tutoring with our 21st Century Grant program (staffed by our own classroom teachers). We strongly support Lynchburg City Schools’ mission—Every Child, By Name and By Need, to Graduation. And yes, we are planning ahead for high school graduation and beyond while your child is part of our Linkhorne Elementary School family!

Linkhorne Elementary School is committed to our PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions/Support) plan, and we expect all students to be: Responsible, Respectful, and Ready to Learn. We work together to ensure that all students understand how this relates to their daily work and routines (in class, at lunch, in hallways, at recess, etc.). Ask your student to describe:  HALLS, LUNCH, PAL, BUS for you today!

As a parent, I often wondered, “What can I do to support my child’s learning and growth this year?” Here are some suggestions:

  • Spend 20 minutes every day reading to or with your child! Research suggests that this simple act can have a significant impact on learning and future academic success. (Visit – The Children’s Reading Foundation website for more information or to take the pledge!)
  • Make math part of everyday life! Do you keep loose change in a jar? What a great way to help your child learn to count coins/money! Cooking is a great way to work with fractions. Free online math games are available at many sites, including: www.mathplayground.com or abcya.com.
  • Make sure that your child gets adequate rest nightly. Learning is hard work! Being well-rested is a great way to start each day.
  • Establish daily routines (time for fun and relaxation after school, homework time, dinner time, bedtime; etc.).
  • Keep the communication lines open with the classroom teacher. If you have questions or concerns, call and schedule a time to meet with the teacher. I am always happy to help facilitate a meeting or conference.
  • Schedule a visit to the classroom or stop in for lunch with your child!
  • Volunteer! We need you! Please complete the Lynchburg City Schools online volunteer application at www.lcsedu.net/community/volunteer and let us know when and where you are willing and able to serve.  I look forward to working with you to make this an exciting year at Linkhorne Elementary School, where we are Roaring With Pride!
