Sixth Grade

Reading
The course is designed to enhance students’ reading comprehension and appreciation through the study of a variety of fiction, non-fiction, and poetry works, read within the classroom and independently. Students will continue to develop vocabulary, study elements of literature, and identify figurative language as they study various literary works.

Language Arts
In this course, students plan, draft, revise and edit narratives, descriptions, and explanations with attention to composition and style, as well as sentence formation, usage, and mechanics.

Seventh Grade

English
In this course advanced students continue to refine written composition skills, with special attention to word choice, organization, style, and grammar. Students will continue vocabulary development through a study of figurative language to include analogies, idioms, similes, and metaphors. In addition, students will continue to read a variety of fiction, non-fiction, and poetry.

Reading
This course is designed for average and accelerated students to enhance reading comprehension and appreciation through the study of a variety of fiction, non-fiction and poetry works, read within the classroom and independently. Students will continue vocabulary development through a study of figurative language to include analogies, idioms, similes, and metaphors.

Eighth Grade

English
The course will continue to emphasize effective composition skills. Student will plan, draft, revise and edit writing, with emphasis on narratives, exposition, and persuasion. Students will apply reading and writing skills in all subject areas. In addition, students will continue to develop an appreciation for literature through a study of literary elements contained in classic works as well as contemporary selections. Students will describe themes or inferred main ideas, interpret cause and effect relationships, and draw conclusions from a variety of literary selections.

Reading
Select students will be scheduled into reading classes with the reading specialist and will address specific skills to improve reading.
