Sixth Grade

boy mathThis course places emphasis on the study of whole numbers, decimals, and fractions. Students will use ratios to compare data sets, make conversions within a given measurement system, make geometric constructions and classify three-dimensional figures, and solve linear equations with one variable. Concepts, skills, symbols, and vocabulary crucial to the understanding of the subject will be identified and used. The development of problem-solving skills will be a major goal. Students will use appropriate technologies such as calculators and computers. A wide range of skills and strategies will be developed in the following areas: number and number sense, computation and estimation, measurement, geometry, probability, statistics, patterns, and algebra.

Seventh Grade

This course places emphasis on solving problems involving consumer applications and proportional reasoning. The students will gain an understanding of the properties of real numbers, solve linear equations and inequalities, and use data analysis techniques to make inferences and predictions. Students will also identify applications of the mathematical principles that can be applied to science and other disciplines. Skills and strategies will be developed in the following areas: number and number sense, computation and estimation, measurement, geometry probability and statistic, patterns, functions, and algebra. Appropriate technologies such as fraction calculators, computers, laser discs, and videos will also be utilized.

Eighth Grade Pre-Algebra

This course includes content that reviews and extends the concepts and skills learned in previous grades and new content that prepares students for more abstract concepts in algebra. Students will identify real-life applications of mathematical principles and their application to science and to other disciplines. A wide range of skills and strategies will be developed in the following areas: number and number sense, computation and estimation, measurement, geometry, probability and statistics, patterns, functions, and algebra.

Eighth Grade Foundations

This course provides students with the foundation skills required for success in the high school Algebra I program. Students will review concepts and skills learned in 6th and 7th grades to firm up pre-algebra skills and then work on algebraic expressions, equations, and inequalities, as well as analyze functions. Students will use the language and symbols of math to discuss and solve problems.

Algebra: High School Credit
Prerequisite: Teacher Recommendation and Pre-algebra
This course includes instruction in building relationships between algebra and arithmetic, geometry, and probability and statistics. Tables and graphs will be used to interpret algebraic expressions, equations, and inequalities, as well as to analyze functions. Students will use the language and symbols of math to discuss and solve problems. (.5 credit per semester)

Advanced Algebra: High School Credit
Prerequisite:
Teacher Recommendation and Pre-algebra
This course includes instruction in greater depth than the traditional algebra course. Students will attach meaning to the abstract concepts of algebra by using tables and graphs to interpret equations and inequalities and to analyze functions. Matrices will be used to organize and manipulate data. Calculators, computers, spreadsheet, and graphing calculators or computer graphing simulators will be used to assist in solving problems. Advanced algebra is the initial course in the sequence of courses designed for a five-year accelerated math program. (.5 credit per semester)
