Dear Perrymont Elementary School Families:
Thank you for supporting our school and enrolling your child at Perrymont Elementary School! We are pleased and proud to announce that we remain fully accredited based on the results of the spring 2012 Virginia Standards of Learning Tests!
Our accelerated math classes begin the first day of school. At this time, we offer this program in grades 2, 3, 4, and 5. Beginning second semester, we will add an accelerated math class in first grade. All students in accelerated math receive instruction at the next grade level. For example, second grade students work on third grade skills, third grade students receive instruction at the fourth grade level, and so on.
We are excited about other innovative programs as well! Our master schedule supports a daily reading intervention block at all grade levels K-5. During this period, students work in small groups at their instructional level in reading. We also will continue to offer remediation and enrichment classes in reading and math during the school day. During these periods, we offer a variety of classes utilizing computer technology, accelerated reader, trade books, 24 Game Math, and station-based learning. We have modified our computer lab schedules to support small group instruction in mathematics. Our teachers are developing formative assessments to identify and target individual student needs on a weekly basis. Our efforts to meet the needs of all students are second to none!
With the assistance of our Food Services Department, we have written and submitted a USDA grant requesting fruit and vegetable snacks for all of our students in grades PreK-5. All of our students will receive these snacks three days per week at no charge! The snacks will be delivered to each classroom by our food service staff. A variety of fruits and vegetables will be offered including apples, oranges, bananas, grapes, watermelon, red and yellow bell peppers, carrots, and different varieties of lettuce. In addition, we will offer some unusual fruits and vegetables such as pluots, kiwis, snap peas, and squash.
Our after-school program, will run from September until April, and will offer reading and math instruction to all students in grades 3 through 5. Students who enroll in our after school program also will be invited to participate in a variety of enrichment activities. These programs are grant funded which means we will be able to provide these services at no charge to our students and their families.
During the 2012-2013 school year, we will continue our efforts to meet the needs of all of our students in grades PreK-5. In order to do so, we need more of our parents and families to be involved. This is your school! Please visit our school and classrooms, volunteer when your schedule permits, join us at school events, attend our Parent Advisory Meetings, or become an active member of our PTO. We need and want your help. Thank you again for your support and for enrolling your child at Perrymont Elementary School!
Sincerely,
Karen Scott Nelson, Principal
