School History

Sheffield Elementary is situated on 10 acres of land on the corner of Kenwood Place and Fenwick Drive and is located in the Fort Hill- Timberlake section of Lynchburg. In 2000, a 4.5 million dollar renovation was undertaken. In August,2001 the renovations were completed. A new heating and cooling system was installed, as well as, a new kitchen, and several new classrooms. Electrical and plumbing upgrades were also done. The school now houses 32 full time teachers and approximately 408 students in grades PK - 5.The last major construction at the school was completed in January 1960. At that time Sheffield housed 260 students in grades 1-5 and a staff of nine teachers. The staff and the principal were transferred to the new facility from Perrymont Avenue School. They had previously been organized on a spilt schedule since the beginning of the 1959-60 school year. Until 1968, students attending Sheffield resided in the communities of Sheffield and Edgewood. In September, 2002 ,approximately 80 students were welcomed to Sheffield due to the closing of Elizabeth Kizer Elementary.

The school community has several advantages to offer students. One advantage is the location within the community of the South River meeting house, the first house of worship in the area. Now a part of Quaker Memorial Presbyterian Church, the stone meeting house serves as a museum and an historical landmark. John Lynch, the founder of Lynchburg, donated the land for the meeting house and is buried in the adjoining cemetery.

The community is bordered by several shopping areas, which provide convenience for shoppers without taking away from the residential atmosphere.
