Glass Orchestra received the “superior” rating for their performances during the Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors Association (VBODA) District VI Band Festival. The festival was held at Lynchburg College the weekend of March 13-14, 2010. The superior rating is the highest possible rating. According to Band Director Larry Seipp, the E.C. Glass band was commended for their “highly polished, professional, completely remarkable, and very musical” performance. Only eight out of 25 high schools received the superior rating.

When a 6’7’’, 315 pound offensive lineman walks into your school and starts talking, you listen; you may even want to take a few notes. In February, the students at Sheffield Elementary School were all ears when former University of Virginia standout and Buffalo Bills player Brad Butler paid them a visit.

Butler’s visit was a very pleasant one actually. It was probably a visit that will go down in the personal history books for most of these kids. The NFL star talked about confidence, achieving goals and appreciating failure.

The message scored a touchdown with most of the Sheffield students – after all, they had something in common with the big guy that put them all on the same playing level – an Alma matter. Yes, Butler is a proud graduate of Sheffield Elementary and wanted to give back to his school. These kids met an NFL athlete that came from the same playground they did and that fact alone gave them the confidence they needed to succeed.

The pep talk was just a bonus.

So you might call what happened next a “double bonus” (pardon the unintentional basketball reference) – a visit from Detroit Lions running back Cedric Peerman. Peerman, a graduate of William Campbell and UVA, stopped by a few days after Butler’s visit to give the students a second helping of encouragement. He wanted to stress that not everyone is built to play football. He instead encouraged the students to find their strengths and work hard to build upon those strengths. He also stressed the importance of education and surrounding yourself with good people.

The students of Sheffield were happy that these two football players made LCS part of their game plan on the off season. They will remember the visits for years to come.

In February 8th graders at Linkhorne Middle School had an opportunity to learn about a variety of careers from over 25 local professionals. Orthodontists, realtors, policemen and many others were on hand to describe their profession and answer questions from students. The students were provided with a questionnaire and were given enough time to meet with at least 3 professionals of their choice. Speakers included parents of our students, representatives from LCS Career Tech programs and local business men and women who wanted to share their educational and professional experience with Linkhorne students.

This program provides a unique opportunity for local business and community leaders as well as interested parents and citizens to meet with school administrators to learn more about the Lynchburg City Schools. This year's program, 'Celebrating Arts in our Schools,' will address the critical role arts play in the development of academic skills, and why art programs are an important element to the overall success of a school division. We will also enjoy a selection of the outstanding programs our schools offer in the arts. Proceeds from the breakfast are used by the Foundation to fund ongoing programs and projects designed to support the division's schools, students, and teachers.

Registration is required before Friday, March 4th. Click here to register or for more information, call (434) 522-3700 ext. 143 or email gillettejk@lcsedu.net.

Collaboration between Lynchburg and Roanoke City Schools has scored the two divisions a grant totaling $1.4 million. Roanoke Catholic Schools and New Vistas School will also benefit from this grant. The money was awarded through the 2009 stimulus funded Enhancing Education Through Technology (EETT) grant competition.

In Lynchburg, the grant will provide the division with more than 800 iPod Touch units. The goal of the grant is that the iPods will help to increase the math and English Standards of Learning Test scores for students. The units will arrive this spring and teachers will be trained on how to use the devices as teaching tools. By the 2010-2011 school year the project will be in all Lynchburg City Schools. This project is called “Partnership to Advance Smaller Technology Integration into Mathematics and English” (PASTIME). Virginia Tech and Apple are also working on this project with the two school divisions.

This highly competitive grant was only awarded to five groups in the state. The other four groups are WHRO Technology Consortium/ Norfolk City Public Schools, Radford University/ Radford City Public Schools, Shenandoah Valley Technology Consortium/ Harrisonburg City Public Schools, and Alexandria City Public Schools.
