On November 25, 2008, under the warmth of the greenhouse roof, Lynchburg City School’s Partners in Education and Lynchburg Grows solidified their partnership by signing a master partnership agreement. Dereck Cunningham, the President of Lynchburg Grows, Dr. Paul McKendrick, Superintendant of Lynchburg City Schools and Dr. Merle Herndon, Director for School Business Partnerships were on hand for the signing.

The partnership between the schools and the urban farm will be multi-layered. Employees at Lynchburg Grows will help LCS elementary schools create gardens of their own, and in doing so, will help children develop a greater appreciation for plants and environmental stewardship. In addition, special needs students at the high school level will be invited to Lynchburg Grows to gain on the job training. The farm experience will help them to develop social skills, self-esteem, self-discipline and responsibility.

Lynchburg Grows was established as a non-profit, urban farm in 2003. Since then, the mostly volunteer group has been renovating 6.5 acres of land (2 acres of which is greenhouse).
