Heritage High School in Lynchburg, Virginia announced today that Florent Levesque, a senior from Lynchburg, VA was awarded the CompTIA -Computing Technology Industry Association – IT Merit Award for Achievements in Information Technology (IT) studies. The award is a $250 cash scholarship to be used toward continuing his education in the IT industry.

Information Technology job opportunities remain plentiful despite the softening of the economy. Certification programs empower students with the necessary knowledge to compete for the available high paying and rewarding IT positions, especially for students who are not pursing college degrees.

Heritage High School commends Florent Levesque for his outstanding work and well-deserved recognition,” Jason Clark, Lynchburg City Schools Computer Systems Technology Instructor said “CompTIA’s continuous support of IT education has made it possible for students like Florent to successfully prepare for their careers. Florent’s diligence and studious effort has solidified an apprenticeship position at MA/COM where he will continue his pursuit of an IT career.

All students at CompTIA-member schools are eligible for the CompTIA IT Merit Award program, specifically including those from an under-represented population, including the economically disadvantaged, minorities, women and persons with disabilities. To be considered for the program, high school seniors must have completed an accredited certification program, like Comp-TIA’s A+, which provides the skills necessary to begin a career in IT.

The CompTIA IT Merit Awards program underscores the importance of technology training and development in today’s workforce. CompTIA has endowed $1 million to its Educational Foundation to provide funding for the CompTIA IT Merit Awards. Twice a year, the program will award $250 in cash to students who have obtained a CompTIA certification for use toward the recipient’s continuing education in the IT industry.

For more information on certification programs or the awards program, see your local career counselor or visit CompTIA’s Web site at www.comptia.org.
