Since April 5, 1871, students have entered our schools with anticipation, expectations, and hopes. Students anticipate challenging academic experiences, expect greater personal enrichment, and hope that their individual efforts help them achieve at high levels. Teachers, parents, administrators and staff seek ways in which to encourage the behavioral and academic growth of each of our students. Every day, the Lynchburg City Schools, with its Tradition of Excellence, commits to its mission to design, implement, and maintain educational programs that “will teach each student the concepts, knowledge, and skills necessary to be a thinking, productive, and responsible citizen.”

As with every year since 1871, this school year began with varying levels of excitement for each individual associated with the Lynchburg City Schools. The school division continues to provide each student with access to a broad, enriching, and comprehensive inventory of pre-kindergarten – 12th grade instructional offerings which “recognizes the uniqueness and worth of all students.” As we respond to the educational needs of individual students, our school community must realize that each of our schools must attain full state accreditation by 2006-07 as measured by the Standards of Learning. While we celebrate our progress toward that goal, there remains much to accomplish. The attainment of full accreditation of each of the schools throughout the City of Lynchburg requires that we:

  • expand pre-kindergarten opportunities with the goal of serving all pre-kindergarten aged children
  • teach students to read independently on grade level by the end of third grade;
  • provide effective Standards of Learning remediation programs at all levels;
  • lessen the achievement gap which exists between various groups of students;
  • be sensitive to, respond to, and respect the diversity of our students and their individual needs;
  • provide effective staff development experiences for all teachers, staff, and administrators;
  • apply technology to improve student learning;
  • provide safe and secure schools;
  • maintain an academic focus while continuing to provide those experiences and activities that make our school division unique: art, instrumental and vocal music, movement education, clubs, athletics, orchestra and theater;
  • continue to expand the Partners In Education program (a joint venture with the Lynchburg Regional Chamber of Commerce); and
  • encourage students to consider enrolling in career-technical courses.

Throughout each school year, I encourage every individual in our school community to support the educational needs of each student. Our students in Lynchburg continue to progress due to the commitment of the citizens residing in our city.
