The Lynchburg City Schools Education Foundation is honored to manage a wide array of sponsored scholarships to recognize academic excellence and provide financial support for students who will be continuing their education after high school.

From the $15,000 Excellence in Science Scholarship that recognizes a top science or engineering student, to significant scholarships that help students interested in career technical programs, community sponsors are committed to our students.  Other areas of scholarships include: medicine, nursing or dentistry; community service; leadership; and a demonstrated ability to overcome adversity.

The following scholarships are currently available:

Excellence in Science Scholarship

Award Eligibility Criteria
  • This award is available to seniors who will graduate from either E. C. Glass High School or Heritage High School.
  • The student must be on track to receive an advanced studies high school diploma.
  • The student must have completed a minimum of four advanced level science and four advanced level math courses prior to their senior year.
  • The student must possess a Grade Point Average of 3.8 or higher.
  • The student must be planning to enter a science or engineering related field of study (computer sciences, engineering, biology, chemistry, physics, etc.) at a college or university with an accredited science or engineering curriculum within the United States.
  • The award is only valid while the student is enrolled in a science or engineering related field of study (computer sciences, engineering, biology, chemistry, physics, etc.) at a college or university with an accredited science or engineering curriculum within the United States.
  • The student should have demonstrated interest in science or engineering with recent awards, projects, and/or achievements in science or engineering related fields.
  • Any finalist for this award must participate in an interview with a division-level selection committee.
Selection Process

Interested students must submit ALL of the following items to be considered:

  1. A completed application which includes contact information, high school math and science course information, a listing of activities/programs with leadership involvement, science or engineering related research/study, and science or engineering related honors/recognitions.
  2. A letter of interest (two pages or less). The letter should contain a brief explanation of interest in science or engineering, plans for a college major, career goals, and how they plan to contribute to the science or engineering field of their choice.
  3. Two letters of recommendation from the student’s choice of teachers, administrators, employers, or individuals with significant knowledge of the student’s experience and involvement in science or engineering related activities.
  4. A third letter of recommendation from a recent or current school counselor.
  5. Responses to 3 short-answer questions (150-250 words) that allows the candidate to share additional information with the review committee. 
Award
  • The award will be presented to the Lynchburg City Schools’ top senior science or engineering student as determined by the above criteria.
  • The student will be selected by April 1st of the academic school year.
  • The total award will be $15,000.
  • The Lynchburg City Schools Education Foundation, Inc. will serve as the fiscal agent and will distribute the award over a four-year time period with an installment of $1,875 each semester.
  • The scholarship applies to tuition, books, and fees.
  • The student will be recognized during the Senior Honors Awards Assembly.

Greater Lynchburg Community Foundation Scholarship

The Greater Lynchburg Community FoundationFinancial assistance to one student graduating from E. C. Glass High School and one from Heritage High School who plans to continue their education at an accredited college or university.

Any senior at E. C. Glass or Heritage High School who has been involved in community service may apply. Any student applying for a scholarship must enter an accredited college or university in the fall following graduation. Applications are available at the LCS Common Application Portal. The application deadline is February 15th.

$500 scholarships will be awarded to two students showing outstanding community involvement.

Scholarship applications should include:

  • Academic transcript (including PSAT/SAT or ACT scores if available)
  • One (1) letter of recommendation from high school administrators/faculty
  • One (1) personal character reference letter from a community leader, clergy or applicant’s work supervisor
  • Volunteer verification documentation

James Howard Scholarship

This $500 scholarship is designated to a college bound Heritage High School football player who has been recommended by his coach and approved by a selection committee.

  

MH Masonry & Associates Scholarship

MH MasonryFinancial assistance to one student graduating from E. C. Glass High School and one from Heritage High School who plans to continue their education at an accredited college or university.

Any senior at E. C. Glass or Heritage High School who has been involved in community service may apply. Any student applying for a scholarship must enter an accredited college or university in the fall following graduation. Applications are available at the LCS Common Application Portal. The application deadline is February 15th.

Any graduating student at Heritage High School who fits this description may apply. Any student applying for a scholarship must enter an accredited college or university in the fall following graduation. Applications are available at the LCS Common Application Portal. The application deadline is February 15th.

  • One (1) letter of recommendation from high school administrators/faculty
