Lynchburg City has been awarded a total of $376,796 in Safe Routes to School construction grants from the Virginia Department of Transportation to increase pedestrian safety around Perrymont, T. C. Miller, and Dearington Elementary Schools by installing sidewalks, crosswalks, and signaled pedestrian crossings.

Perrymont:  $134,982
Project will install approximately 3,154 feet of new sidewalk, new marked crosswalks, installation of handicap accessible curbs at intersections, and upgraded school zone pavement markings.

Dearington:  $115,920
Project will install approximately 2,930 feet of new sidewalk, new marked crosswalks around the school and neighborhood, handicap accessible curbs, and new school zone pavement markings.

T. C. Miller  $125,944
Project will install approximately 1,745 feet of new sidewalk, new marked crosswalks, and 8 timed pedestrian signals.

This project is the result of the Safe Routes to School partnership between Lynchburg City, Lynchburg City Schools, and Region 2000 Local Government Council that began at the end of 2010. The result of the partnership was the successful Walk to School Day events held in October at Perrymont, Dearington, T. C. Miller, Linkhorne, and R.S. Payne Elementary Schools and the continued efforts to promote health and wellness associated with walking to our students.
