Our Elementary Schools
Eleven elementary schools serve over 4,000 students in kindergarten through grade 5. Each school is fully accredited by the Virginia Department of Education.
Dearington Elementary School for Innovation and T. C. Miller School for Innovation are operated as magnet schools. Students from across the school division who do not reside in the attendance zone for each school may make application to attend. Student selection for attendance is made on a random basis.
Each elementary school offers a comprehensive full-day kindergarten program. Students who are five years of age on or before September 30 are eligible to attend. Testing for early admission is not available.
Each school is served by a highly qualified teacher is art, music, and physical education. Instruction is provided weekly to all students based upon the Standards of Learning identified by the Virginia Department of Education. Strings instruction is available to all students beginning in kindergarten as an elective. Instruction is delivered by highly qualified strings instructors using the Suzuki method.
Students who are four years of age by September 30 are eligible to attend Lynchburg City Schools' Pre-Kindergarten Program. Over 250 students are currently being served in 15 classrooms housed in 9 elementary schools. Parents interested in having their children attend should complete the pre-kindergarten application.
Comprehensive services for students with disabilities are available through Lynchburg City Schools Special Education program.
English as a Second Language
Students identified as needing ELL instruction are provided services through qualified instructors provided by the school division.
- Phonological Awareness Screening (PALS) - Administered to all students K-5 in the fall and spring to determine literacy proficiency.
- Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test (NNAT) - This gifted screening test is given to first graders. The test provides a culture-fair and language-free means of measuring a student's general ability using nonverbal stimuli.
- Gifted Portfolio Assessment - Second grade students complete a Portfolio Assessment. The portfolio has three parts; creative writing, illustration, and problem solving.
- Stanford 10 Achievement Test - This gifted screening test is given to second grade students. The test has several sections including; word study skills, reading vocabulary, reading comprehension, math problem solving, math procedures, spelling, language, environment, and listening.
- Learning Styles Inventory (LSI) - This test is administered to all students in fourth grade to provide students, teachers, and parents information regarding how students learn best.
- Stanford Diagnostic Reading Test 4 (SDRT-4) - This test is administered in February to students in grade 5 to determine an instructional reading level for each student and to provide information to assist in transition to middle school.
- Division Wide Assessment Program (DWAP) - These assessments are administered at the end of each six weeks to students in grades 1-5 in English, math, and science. Students in grades 2-5 are administered an assessment in social studies as well. These assessments assess student achievement on content taught each six weeks.
- Standards of Learning (SOL) - These assessments are administered to students in grades 3-5 in reading and math, grades 3 & 5 in science and social studies, and grade 5 in writing. Results are used to assess individual students and to determine accreditation status by Virginia Department of Education and Annual Yearly Progress (AYP) under the No Child Left Behind legislation. The grade 5 writing test in administered in March and all other tests are administered in late May to early June.
