A key to the city was one of many gifts presented to Interim Superintendent Dr. Larry Massie during  Wednesday’s reception. City Manager Kimball Payne presented the gift to Massie at the end of an array of speeches praising him for all he has done in the eight months he’s been at the helm of Lynchburg City Schools.

Greg Sullivan, director of information technology, presented Massie with some humorous “technology” items, including an old rotary phone and a monogrammed IT shirt that he said was “the closest you’ll ever get to working in IT.”

School Board Chairman Charlie White thanked Massie for helping them get through not one but two budgets, and gave him an engraved rocking chair, a gift from all the members of the school board.

Massie said he was speechless but then took a few moments to offer thanks, including a special thank you to School Board Clerk Wendie Sullivan, who organized the event.

Teachers, principals, staff and community members attended, as well as Mayor Joan Foster and several Lynchburg City Council members.
