College Application Week was a big hit at both Lynchburg City Schools high schools in November.

580: Number of seniors participating

720: Number of applications submitted to colleges

160: Number of students at both high schools who were offered admission to four-year colleges and universities on the spot

2 Dozen: Number of volunteers who helped make this week a success

More than two dozen volunteers joined Beacon of Hope staff to make this week a success. Faculty and staff at both schools wore college gear everyday throughout the week to keep the air abuzz with post secondary excitement.

  • Volunteers included Lynchburg College Bonner Leaders, Randolph interns, Beacon Board Members, and parents and members of the booster club.
  •  Beacon of Hope was joined by Word Works!, a nonprofit writing lab in Lynchburg. Volunteers worked with students on the composition of their college essays and personal statements.
  • Every single senior received Future Folders, provided through a grant from the Easley Foundation by the Beacon of Hope and high school guidance departments through classroom visits and Future Center workshops. In each folder was an unofficial copy of the student’s transcript, current class rank, SAT scores, personal statements, Common Application copies, checklists for final applications, check lists for FAFSA and financial aid deadlines in the spring.
