Dear LCS community, 

We have some highlights to share with you from our Tuesday, August 17th Lynchburg City School Board Work Session that was held at 7:00 p.m.

Deputy Superintendent Amy Pugh presented preliminary student enrollment numbers in LCS. Overall, 7,699 students have enrolled which includes 239 who are enrolled in the Virtual Academy. 

During the Community Update, Dr. Crystal Edwards and administrators provided details regarding the challenges with bus transportation. Directors Steve Gatzke, Ethel Reeves and John Collins presented information about the problems that occurred. Challenges with scheduling, communication, and software were shared along with proposed solutions to the problems. Dr. Edwards and the supporting staff were thanked for the efforts that have been made and board members encouraged them to continue working diligently to find solutions to the problems. 

Director LaTonya Brown concluded the Community Update discussion with a summary of safety and security matters at the Virtual Academy and Empowerment Academy new locations. She also gave an update on COVID-19 protocols. In accordance with the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) and Center for Disease Control Center and Prevention (CDC), the LCS Health Mitigation Plan was updated and posted on the LCS website. LCS will continue to follow the CDC’s quarantine and isolation guidance.

The next School Board Meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, September 7th at 5:00 p.m. in the Board Room of the School Administration Building.
