Man holding flag of Columbia in front of student assemblyDearington Elementary School for Innovation celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month with a presentation by visitors representing Colombia, Guatemala, Mexico and Peru. The visitors, all students or professors at local colleges and universities—including CVCC, Liberty University, and University of Lynchburg—carried flags and wore clothing that represented their native countries. They talked about their country’s traditions, cultures, landmarks and more. At the end of each country presentation, students stood for the country’s national anthem. At the end of the presentation, students, who all receive Spanish instruction as one of the school’s innovations, learned and chanted Spanish words, including the Spanish translation for the school’s motto: Fins Up, No Excuses!
