Requests for Records

The Virginia Freedom of Information Act, § 2.2-3700 et seq., grants citizens of Virginia and members of the media the right to access public records maintained by the Lynchburg City Schools. All public records, except those specifically exempted from disclosure by law, are available for inspection and copying upon request. School staff will inform you in writing if the records you have requested are exempt from disclosure.

LCS will respond to your request within 5 working days of its receipt. Please be aware that LCS may notify you that it requires an additional 7 working days to provide a complete response. A working day is a day on which LCS offices are open. “Day One” is considered the day after the request is received. The five-day period does not include weekends or holidays. LCS Administrative Office hours are 8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Requests submitted after working hours or at times LCS Administrative Offices are closed will be marked as received on the next LCS working day.

LCS may make reasonable charges for the actual costs to access, search for, duplicate and supply requested records.

It is recommended, but not required, that requests for records be made in writing. Requests can be made in person, by phone, by mail or electronically. Requests should identify the records requested as specifically as possible, and include the requester's name and address.
