Disability History and Awareness Month - Awareness. Respect. Acceptance.

October marks Disability History and Awareness month. This is a time to boost public understanding and emphasize the need for full inclusion of people with disabilities in schools and communities. About one in five Americans have disabilities. This includes nearly one million people in Virginia.

The Commonwealth of Virginia and the Virginia Department of Education actively celebrate Disability History and Awareness Month. Their main goal is to encourage respect, understanding, and equal opportunities in schools.

The focus is on both raising awareness and teaching about disability history. This initiative aims to foster positive attitudes in schools. Resources are also provided for students, families, and schools to support local disability services.
