Several Dearington Elementary School for Innovation students were awarded Thursday, May 5, 2022, from the Optimist Club of Lynchburg sweeping all of the awards in a citywide competition. The Chairman of the Optimist Club, Jeff Woodard said “it is highly unusual that one school would win all 6 categories, as we had a number of other entries from other schools, but that was the way it turned out.” Dearington students winning awards were: Coda Capps (Community Service), Da’lijah Culpepper (Humanities), Eric Lambert, Jr. (Courage), D’Veyah Sandidge (Fellowship), Zymeer Vassal (Science) and Huw Yoder (Arts).  All students received gift cards and certificates in a ceremony at Oakwood Country Club.
