At the Lynchburg City Council meeting held on Tuesday, August 23, 2022, Alaysia Oakes was recognized by the City Council. Alaysia was the class of 2022 valedictorian at Heritage High School. She is a 19-time track and field state champion, a 5-time track and field National All-American, the Indoor & Outdoor Track & Field Athlete of the Year for the Seminole District and Region 3C, and the News & Advance Female Athlete of the Year for indoor and outdoor track and field. This fall, Alaysia will attend Stanford University, and she will also be a member of the Stanford University Track Team.

The Heritage High School Girls' Track and Field team was also recognized during the City Council meeting for their incredible season. The Girls' Track & Field team won the Indoor Region 3C Championship, followed by the VHSL 3A Indoor Track & Field State Championship during the winter. During the spring, the team won the Region 3C Championship followed by the VHSL 3A Outdoor Track & Field State Championship. This makes three consecutive championships since 2019 that the team has won. We are proud of our students for all of their accomplishments and how well they represent LCS.
