Boys and Girls Club Thanksgiving MealLCS superintendent Dr. Scott Brabrand joined Cadets from E. C. Glass High School’s Air Force Junior ROTC to break bread with the Lynchburg Boys and Girls Club at their annual Thanks Meal in November. Brabrand spoke with the crowd of more than 240 in attendance while JROTC cadets served a traditional Thanksgiving meal on behalf of the Boys and Girls Club.

"A culture of ABCs," is how Brabrand described a new educational mindset, which is making significant progress in improving academic success for Lynchburg boys and girls. "By promoting excellence in achievement, excellence in behavior, and excellence in culture we maximize the potential of every student," Brabrand explained.

The culture of ABCs and the associated Comprehensive Plan’s impact is evidenced by first quarter 2012-13 data recently compiled by LCS. Data shows the new plan is already demonstrating positive progress. "We’re seeing more advanced placement course enrollment for instance," he said, adding, "And, we’ve seen a marked increase in As and Bs, as well as a decrease in Ds and Fs, which is something you can all be very proud of."

Other notable achievements include a decrease in students with unexcused absences, a decrease in short-term suspensions and an increase in volunteerism, according to Brabrand. "These sorts of accomplishments are the result of community commitment, and it requires continued involvement from everyone. Organizations such as Boys and Girls Club are key parts of this team effort," he added.

JROTC Cadet Shalame Parks said she embraces the culture shift in her school. "I’ve seen positive change, and I think these kids here tonight will have a better future ahead of them because of the improvements," she said. "We’re all in this together, so I think it’s important for people from our school to help out the Boys and Girls Club when we can."

JROTC Cadet Notori Abbitt credited the Boys and Girls Club volunteers with preparing a first rate meal for the evening. "All we did was help out with the serving and the clean up. The people who did all the hard work on their own time started early this morning, before I even woke up," she said.

Lynchburg Boys and Girls Club founder Louie Robinson Sr. said it was a great evening for everyone. "Having the LCS Superintendent speak and the E. C. Glass Air Force cadets help out shows the team commitment we need to help our kids."
