Dyslexia Advisor

A Dyslexia Advisor is a licensed Reading Specialist who provides expertise on dyslexia and related reading disorders. Their primary role is to act as a resource and liaison, supporting students, teachers, and parents. They advise on effective instructional strategies, accommodations, and interventions for students with dyslexia. They also provide training and professional development to teachers to help them better understand and address the needs of these students in the classroom.

Elementary Literacy Coach

A highly qualified candidate will provide school-level leadership while serving as an instructional coach to support teachers in literacy instruction. They must demonstrate a deep understanding of best practices in instructional coaching, incorporating state standards, division curriculum expectations, and student data analysis to drive student achievement.

This position provides school-level leadership and coaching to support teachers in effective literacy instruction. As a literacy leader for the school, this role involves modeling best practices, offering one-on-one coaching, and facilitating professional development to enhance instructional strategies, while also leading the building-level literacy team. In collaboration with the classroom teacher, the Literacy Coach analyzes student data to inform decision-making, ensures alignment with state standards and the division’s high-quality instructional materials for literacy, and supports differentiated instruction to meet diverse student needs. Additionally, they collaborate with administrators, teachers, and student support staff to implement division-wide literacy initiatives and foster a culture of literacy. Through ongoing professional learning and curriculum support, the Literacy Coach plays a critical role in improving student achievement.  In addition, the Literacy Coach meets and works with the division-level literacy team to review literacy data and plan best practices for literacy instruction.  In collaboration with the building-level administrator, this position helps to maintain and organize Title 1 federal documentation for the school. 

Middle School Reading Specialist

The Middle School Reading Specialist will provide evidence-based reading instruction and intervention to students in Grades 6-8 who are identified as needing additional support based on the Virginia Language and Literacy Screening System (VALLSS). This position is critical in supporting the requirements of the Virginia Literacy Act (VLA) and ensuring that all students receive high-quality, targeted reading instruction aligned to the Science of Reading.

Virginia Literacy Act

With the passage of the Virginia Literacy Act (VLA) in the 2022 General Assembly, Virginia is taking the lead nationwide to improve early literacy outcomes for Virginia’s young learners. Through the VLA, the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) will support school divisions through a multi-year effort with tools, resources, technical assistance and funding.

ALL In Tutoring

Starting in the fall of 2023, Lynchburg City Schools expanded tutoring efforts during the day for students in grades 3-8 as part of the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE)’s ALL In VA tutoring program.
