Why Pre-Kindergarten Works
Strengthening early childhood experiences can help prepare more Virginia children for kindergarten.
- Children in LCS Pre-Kindergarten program are cared for and taught by knowledgeable licensed teachers and staff with skills to support their development and learning.
- Pre-kindergarten focuses on the necessary literacy, math, self-regulation, and social skills needed to be successful when entering kindergarten.
- Children are encouraged and taught in ways that are fun and exciting which can stimulate an excitement for learning!
Who May Apply – Lynchburg City Schools Pre-Kindergarten Program
- LCS Pre-Kindergarten applications are accepted for children who will be four years old on or before September 30, 2020.
- Parents of children who are residents of the city of Lynchburg.

- Complete the 2020-21 Pre-Kindergarten Application (Español) and return it to one of the following locations:

Selection Process – Lynchburg City Schools Pre-Kindergarten
- Only children who will be 4 years old on or before September 30, 2020 will be screened.
- Once applications are received, parents/guardians will be contacted to schedule an appointment for the Pre-Kindergarten screening; after openings are filled, parents/guardians may still apply and eligible children will be placed on a wait list.
- Acceptance is based on meeting one or more criteria set by the state and LCS Pre-Kindergarten screening process.
- Parents/Guardians of accepted students will receive a letter via the U.S. mail.
Selection Process – Lynchburg City Schools Pre-Kindergarten
Lynchburg City Schools has Pre-Kindergarten classrooms at the following locations:
- Hutcherson Early Learning Center
- Paul Munro Elementary
- R. S. Payne Elementary
School placement is based on the parents' or guardians' home address or childcare program address provided during the screening . If your child's home address or childcare location changes during the school year, please notify your child's school immediately.
Once accepted to the Lynchburg City Schools Pre-Kindergarten program you will need to provide the following information at the beginning of the school year:
- The child’s state birth certificate (Application for Birth Certificate - Vital Record)
- The child’s current physical examination record (Physical Examination Form)
- The child’s immunization record (Immunization Requirements)
- Proof of residence
- Proof of income
- Completed parent questionnaire
