The Lynchburg City Schools Department of Special Education is committed to providing individualized services that support the academic, social, and emotional success of students with disabilities. Our work is guided by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), a federal law that ensures students with disabilities are entitled to a free appropriate public education in the least restrictive environment.

Through IDEA, eligible students receive FAPE a free appropriate public education in two ways:

  • IEP, an Individualized Education Program, which includes specialized instruction, related services, and personalized goals tailored to their unique strengths and needs.
  • 504 Plans under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, for students who do not require specialized instruction but still need support to access learning. These plans provide accommodations to help students fully participate in the general education curriculum.

We partner with families, educators, and the community to design meaningful supports that empower each student to reach their full potential in a supportive and inclusive learning environment.
