Lynchburg City Schools (LCS) high school theatre, orchestra, and marching band students earned prestigious honors in September and October of 2025.
LCS Steals the Show at Virginia Theatre Competition
E. C. Glass and Heritage high school theatre students participated in the Virginia Theatre Association (VTA) conference in Norfolk, VA, from Oct. 22-26. The event brought secondary schools from across the Commonwealth together for five days of competition, educational workshops, college auditions, and networking.
E. C. Glass earned a spot in the Southeastern Theatre Conference (SETC) in Chattanooga, Tennessee, in March after being named one of the top two competitors at the VTA for their performance of “Failure: A Love Story,” directed by program lead Allison Daugherty. A spot in the SETC is one of the highest honors a student theatre program can receive.

E. C. Glass also won the following awards:
- Best Costumes
- Best Ensemble
- First place, High School Monologue Competition: Ninth grader Rebecca Spitzer
- Honorable mention, Scenic Design: 12th grader Vee McAndrew
- Honorable mention, Props: 12th grader Weston Englund
Heritage High School theatre students performed “Judge Tenderly of Me,” an original one-act play by the school’s theatre director, Larry “Biff” Hart. They represented the school well, winning the following awards:
- Best Design
- Best Ensemble
- Best Original Play
- All-Star Cast: 12th grader Coleman Bradner and 11th grader Olivia Gallian
- Top High School Actor: 12th grader Paige Neylon

4 Students Qualify for Top Regional Orchestra
E. C. Glass and Heritage high school students auditioned for the South Central Senior Regional Honors Orchestra (SRO) in Charlottesville on Sept. 19 and 20. The following students were selected:
- E. C. Glass 12th grader Thomas Lamb: Ninth chair for violin
- Heritage High 11th grader Morgan Bowers: Fourth chair for viola
- E. C. Glass 10th grader Ez Cyphert: Sixth chair for viola
- E. C. Glass 10th grader Sophie Boyers: Seventh chair for viola
- E. C. Glass 12th grader Alton Quinn: First chair for trombone
They will rehearse and perform alongside the top student musicians in the region on Nov. 14 and 15 at the SRO event. The concert will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 15, at Blacksburg High School. It’s free and open to the public. By qualifying for the SRO, these students also qualified to audition for the competitive All-Virginia Orchestra and Band.
ECG Marching Band Named State Champions
E. C. Glass High School was named the Group 3 State Champion at the Virginia Marching Band Cooperative (VMBC) championships on Saturday, Oct. 25, in Lynchburg. They went on to compete against the top state competitors at the Commonwealth Cup, earning seventh place overall. The VMBC championships and Commonwealth Cup are the highest marching band contests in Virginia.
