Lynchburg City Schools (LCS) is excited to announce a new remote learning plan which will help us prevent disruptions to learning for students in the event of school closings due to inclement weather. This plan will help ensure LCS meets instructional hour requirements, preventing future calendar changes due to weather-related closures. LCS will notify families if a remote learning day is necessary.
Remote Learning Assignments: Grades K-8
Each student in grades K-8 will receive a paper instructional packet consisting of multiple days’ worth of learning activities. Copies of these learning activities will also be available online. K-8 students will be required to complete the assigned work for each remote learning day and turn the assignments into their teachers when they return.
Remote Learning Assignments: Grades 9-12
For students in grades 9-12, teachers will provide remote learning assignments for students to complete. They will access assignments on Google Classroom using their school-provided Chromebooks.
All remote assignments will consist of grade-level-appropriate activities designed to reinforce skills aligned with Virginia learning standards. Students will be able to independently complete their packets or assignments with minimal help from adults.
Optional Remote Learning Assignments: Pre-K
Pre-K students can complete optional activities on remote learning days. Choiceboards containing activity options will be shared with parents via ClassDojo and posted on the LCS website.
Remote Learning for Special Education Students
Special education teachers and case managers will provide support and hold office hours during the remote learning day to assist students and families as they engage in supplemental assigned learning activities. Teachers will reach out with more information.
Related service providers (including speech-language, occupational therapy, physical therapy, counseling, and other services) will contact families directly to coordinate or reschedule service times, as appropriate, to ensure continuity of services in a manner that is flexible and responsive to individual student needs.
If you have any questions or concerns related to instruction, accommodations, services, or supports, please contact your child’s teacher or case manager.
Teacher Office Hours
While instruction will be asynchronous, teachers will provide support and guidance during office hours through Google Meet. Students can ask questions and connect with teachers during these optional virtual sessions. Meeting links will be shared with families via email or ClassDojo.
Student attendance on remote learning days will be counted through completion of assigned work or participation in virtual office hours with their teacher.
FAQ
Why is LCS introducing remote learning?
This remote learning plan is designed to minimize disruption to learning as a result of weather-related school closures. By providing assignments for students to complete at home, LCS aims to promote continuity in students’ educational experiences, fulfill state instructional time requirements, and avoid having to revise the calendar to make up missed time.
How will remote learning assignments be graded?
K-8 students will receive participation grades for completing packet assignments. High school students will receive grades as normal for completing schoolwork assigned in Google Classroom.
How will attendance be taken?
A student will be considered present for the remote learning day when evidence of engagement is documented for that instructional day. Schools will document and maintain student participation based instructional packet completion (K-8), Google Classroom work completion (9-12), or attendance for virtual office hours.
What if I can’t access the internet during the remote learning day?
Students in grades K-8 can complete the learning activities in their paper packets without using the internet. If high school students are unable to access Google Classroom during the remote learning day, they should work directly with their teacher so that assignments can be completed in a timely manner when they return to school.
How can students access virtual teacher office hours?
Teachers and principals will send Google Meet links for office hours via email or ClassDojo.
What if I lose my packet?
Learning activities in the packets are available on the top of this page on remote learning days.
How can parents/guardians support their children on remote learning days?
We encourage parents and guardians to provide a quiet, distraction-free, and organized work environment at home. Please monitor your child’s progress, ensure they complete their assignments, and maintain open communication with their teachers.
