Application information
  • Early College Program applications will be distributed after December 2, 2019.  Please see your school counselor for an application after December 2, 2019.
  • Applications are due to your school counselor by January 30, 2020.   
  • It is the student’s responsibility to check with teachers (for teacher recommendations) and school counselor to ensure that all application materials are received, on or preferably prior to the deadline.  Request recommendations at least two weeks in advance of the deadline. 
  • Completed applications are submitted and reviewed by the CVCC selection committee.  
  • In mid-March, decision letters are mailed and applicants are notified. 
Admission Criteria
  • Students must have a 3.0 or higher grade point average in order to apply. 
  • Students must apply to CVCC--acceptance to the college is not acceptance to the Early College Program.  Students need to keep track of their SIS number (student identification number).  The SIS number is received when students submit their application.  
  • Students must take the English and math VPT tests and place into English Composition and Pre-calculus.  
In-School Presentation

Representatives from the Early College Program will present to 10th grade students on Wednesday, October 2, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. Students should check with their teachers before signing up. The sign up deadline is Tuesday, September 30. 2019 by 2:30 p.m.

Information Session for Prospective Students & Parents

The Early College Open House for parents and students is on Tuesday, January 14, 2020 at 6:00 p.m. in Merritt Hall rooms 5122-5125.  

Expenses

Students and parents are responsible for the tuition; however, LCS provides books and transportation.  Financial assistance is available, please check with your school counselor. 

 Other Information
  • Typically, students do not return to ECG for afternoon classes.  However, students have the option to take afternoon classes at ECG.  
  • CVCC has its own academic calendar which might not be compatible with the LCS academic calendar.   
  • CVCC has their own policies and procedures, which are independent from LCS.  

Central Virginia Governor’s School (CVGS) Program

Application information
  • CVGS applications are available on their website.  Under the Admissions tab, you will find all of the documents needed for the application, including application, student record form, teacher recommendation forms (1 math, 1 science and 1 other teacher).  
  • Students must have completed or currently be enrolled in Advanced Geometry/Trigonometry and Advanced Chemistry.  
  • Applications are due to your school counselor by February 7, 2020. 
  • It is the student’s responsibility to check with teachers (for teacher recommendations) and school counselor to ensure that all applications materials are received, on or preferably prior to the deadline. Request recommendations at least two weeks in advance of the deadline. 
  • Completed applications are submitted and reviewed by a LCS selection committee. 
  • Late March/early April, notifications are mailed to accepted students, those on the waiting list, and those who were not selected. 
Admission Criteria
  • This is a highly selective program.  
  • The selection committee considers standardized test scores, academic achievement, and demonstrated interest in science and mathematics when evaluating and ranking student applications. 
  • Students must have completed or currently be enrolled in Advanced Geometry/Trigonometry and Advanced Chemistry.  
  • CVGS requires all applicants to take both the English and math VPT assessments; students must place into English Composition and Pre-calculus.   
  • In addition, students must take the PSAT.  Students can still sign up in the School Counseling Office and pay with cash or check or pay by debit or credit card on My School Bucks.  The fee is $18 and testing date is October 16, 2019 (PSAT/NMSQT is only offered in October).  Students should sign up no later than the priority deadline of September 18, 2019.
     
In-School Presentation 

Representatives from the Central Virginia Governor’s School Program will present to eligible 10th grade students on Wednesday, November 20, 2019 at 1:15 p.m. (session will end at 2:30 p.m.).  Students should check with their teachers before signing up. The sign up deadline is Monday, November 18, 2019 by 2:30 p.m.

CVGS will host a Program Overview Night for prospective students and their parents from Campbell County and Lynchburg City on a date TBD.  

Expenses

The tuition for students accepted into this program is paid to CVGS by the student's school division.

  • Students attend CVGS for the first three periods and then they report to their base school, ECG, for afternoon classes (specifically English, social studies, and an elective or core course).  A travel period is built into our students’ schedules. 
  • It is possible for students to take courses during their travel period, but the course options are very limited.    
  • Since CVGS is a regional school, it has its own academic calendar which might not be compatible with the LCS academic calendar.   The academic year for CVGS starts earlier than the LCS academic year.

  • Completed applications are submitted and reviewed by the STEM Academy selection committee.    
  • After May 1, notifications are mailed to accepted students, those on the waiting list, and those who were not selected.

Virginia Placement Test (VPT) Testing

Testing will be at ECG on the following dates and times:

  • December 10-11, 2019 from 2:45-5:30 p.m. (students are responsible for their own transportation home)
  • Students can also go to CVCC and take it at their earliest convenience.

Notes
  • To ensure that any of these programs are conducive to your post-graduation education, students and families are encouraged to contact the colleges/universities that they might be interested in applying to for their recommendation on the students’ preferred academic program.    

To protect and respect students’ instructional time, VPT testing will be scheduled after school in December. Free prep classes are available through Beacon of Hope. Students who are unable to stay after school on the determined dates can test on the campus of CVCC. More information is in the link below.
