Dear LCS community,

We have some highlights to share with you from our Tuesday, February 15, 2022, Lynchburg City School Board Work Session.

The Lynchburg City School Board Work Session began with a special presentation honoring the late Samuel F. Kelso (ca. 1825-1880). He was one of Lynchburg’s first African American teachers after the Civil War. The presentation included an unveiling and dedication of a Virginia historical highway marker. As an added bonus to the ceremony, music was supplied by the LCS Elementary Orchestra students performing in the lobby of the School Administration Building.

As part of the LCS community update, Deputy Superintendent Amy Pugh gave an update of COVID-19 numbers and recent changes to the Health Mitigation Plan.

Both the Middle School Program of Studies and the 2022-23 LCS calendar were approved by the Board.

Director of Facilities Steve Gatzke shared information from the Capital Improvement Plan. The plan includes the construction of an asphalt paved service drive at the Facilities and Transportation building. The new drive will connect the vehicle (bus) parking area to the entrance on Bradley Drive. Included in the project is a pedestrian walkway along Wards Ferry Rd., in front of Heritage High School, from Timberlake Rd. to the school entrance.

Superintendent Dr. Crystal Edwards and other LCS administrators presented the proposed operating budget for the 2022-23 school year. The powerpoint may be viewed here.

After the closed session, the superintendent recommended that, because our numbers are trending down and in agreement with Senate Bill 739, our students have the option of wearing a mask starting March 1. For staff, Dr. Edwards recommends that we “stay put” and keep the current requirements for now. Federal law requires that masks must be worn on school buses.

See more about the discussions, actions, and information by viewing the 02-15-2022 School Board Work Session on the LCS YouTube channel and the updated documents on the 02-15-2021 Agenda.

The next Finance and Facilities Committee Meeting will take place on Tuesday, February 22, 2022 at 3:30 p.m. The next School Board Meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, March 1, at 5:00 p.m. in the Board Room of the School Administration Building, and the next School Board Work Session is scheduled for Tuesday, March 15 at 5:00 p.m.

Thank you for supporting our LCS mission: Every Child, By Name and By Need, to Graduation!
