Parental Notification of Instructional Materials with Sexually Explicit Content

Lynchburg City School Board revised Policy IIA and adopted Regulation IIA-RZ to establish clear procedures for schools to (i) identify instructional materials with sexually explicit content, (ii) ensure parental notification of any instructional materials with sexually explicit content, (iii) permit parents to review all instructional materials with sexually explicit content, and (iv) ensure alternative instructional materials, that do not include sexually explicit content, are provided in a non-punitive manner for any student whose parent so requests.

Lists of resources divided by grade and subject will be linked below when available. These lists will be routinely updated as LCS continues to review new materials.

Each school website will have a section identified as Instructional Materials which will include school-specific instructional materials identified to contain sexually explicit content by subject and grade level.

LCS recognizes that parents should guide their children in the selection of choice instructional resources, and there are times when a resource may not align with their family values. In such situations, we invite parents to meet with the teacher to collaboratively select alternate recommendations or solutions.

If a teacher intends to use any resource that contains sexually explicit content, the school principal, or their designee, will notify the parent/guardian 30 days prior to the use of this material. Upon request, parents may have their child use alternative material in a non-punitive manner that does not include sexually explicit content. Alternative material may not be available for AP Dual Enrollment or SOL exams. If parents choose to request alternative material for a class, they must notify the teacher at a minimum of one week prior to the date of the planned instruction.

Note: Not all of the resources are used at every school.
